Yes, wild horses roam freely within Assateague State Park and it is one of life’s great pleasures to wake up in the morning and see them grazing on your campsite. It’s rugged and wild looking, with lots of shrubbery, brush, and bushes. You can walk 30 feet over the dune and watch sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the campsites are nestled right up against the dunes. This is simply beach camping at its best. All of the loops have both interior and exterior sites. It’s organized in a number of horseshoe shaped lettered loops that run north to south along the island. Electric hookups are available in one loop only. The state park offers beach-front camping with no water or sewer hook ups. It’s north of Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague. You can even get a permit to ride in the Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) zone. Outdoor recreation includes swimming, surfing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, biking, hunting and crabbing. You can also explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests and coastal bays. Area Recreation & ActivitiesĪssateague Island National Seashore has a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities including seeing the magnificent wild horses that call the barrier island their home. Campers may not bring firewood from out of state. Each site can accommodate up to 6 people and 6 horses. The equestrian campsites are available mid-October to mid-April. Bayside Loop B is a “generator-free zone”. Each site also has a table, fire ring and grill. All sides are drive-in, with parking spurs. The Bayside Campground can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. All are located on or near the sand and beach. ![]() The Oceanside Campground can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs. Drive in campsites are also available other times of the year on a first-come, first-serve basis. Campsites can be reserved Mid March through Mid November. There are also 5 group campsites, 6 backcountry and 2 equestrian campsites available.
